Interview with Dr. Becket aka Doc Bec :UPDATE




Under-rated MC, Producer and Graf Writer the lyrical architect Doctor Becket aka Dr.Becket  aka Docta Bec aka Doc Bec hails from Maryland, Washington D.C. and first graced the underground Hip-Hop scene in 1997 appearing on the Specs produced "Lyrixcism" single, then later in 1998 on the Dr Becket and K-Skills "First Class" EP, which featured the dope Ultramagnetic MC's "Raise It Up" sampling cut "Galaxy Rays"...





Doc Bec then released "Bad Mutha F#%!A / Creativity" 12'" in 2000 and a full album titled Way of Life in 2005, along with a limited edition EPs' and guest appearances on records from Jazz Addixx, Sentense, The Good People and others as well as unreleased music...Doc Bec has kept busy and thanks to Facebook, I was able to ask him some questions and these are his answers and his history.

CRDS: Doc, how were you introduced to Hip Hop?...what was the first record that you ever heard and what are you earliest memories of Hip Hop growing up where you lived?

Doc Bec: well I like Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Run DMC...they were the first i heard on the radio...

CRDS: what about seeing live Hip Hop?

Doc Bec: first live hip hop I ever saw was Oso Fresh opening up the mic to emcees who wanted to say something...

CRDS: who was Oso Fresh please Doc?


Doc Bec: Oso Fresh was a DJ who used to spin at a place called Pollen but he still spins classics today in places in D.C.


CRDS: Dope, so what age would you have been to first see him live?


Doc Bec: maybe a year after high school he let me get on the open mic.


CRDS: so you were already writing rhymes by then?


Doc Bec: I think so...I would go out and grab the mic when he made it available, and kick whatever I had at the time...

CRDS: dope, How did you choose the name Doctor Becket, what is the reason behind the name?



Doc Bec: my friend Lil Mo' from Indonesia gave me that nick name cause I guess i reminded him of the doc bec character on Quantum Leap..

CRDS: Oh the old TV show? (Doc actually mentions Quantum Leap in his Lord Finesse sampling track "Bad Mutha....r")




 

Doc Bec: yeah


CRDS: What was your first release and was there any material that you did before hand that has never been released?


Doc Bec: We did "Lyrixcism" in 97 by Specs.. then I did some tracks on my own and i turned him (K-Skills) on to Specs so he had a beat which was "First Class" so I said...hey lets do it all as a 12" and then his cousin lived in NJ so we linked with DJ Kaos and Number Nine and then I had my cousin put up the loot and we did it..

CRDS: was that DJ Kaos that worked with The Artifacts and what is Specs doing these days?

Doc Bec: yeah it's DJ Kaos from The Artifacts and the last I had seen with Specs was a My Space page..and it seemed that he was still supporting First Class... at that time

CRDS: dope, out of all the tracks you have produced or guested on...what is your highlight one please Doc?

Doc Bec: I really like the one the Good People put out cause it has got Prince Po and Mr.Man from Bush Babees, to me that was my ultimate 90's collab...

Doc Bec: yea came out round 2008 i think...

CRDS: What Producers and Artists influence you today?

Doc Bec: I like MF Doom and the new stuff Artifacts puttin' out..along with Good People, Jazz Addixx, Ollie Ox Grill, Headstruck on some underground sh#!

CRDS: word...I must admit I have not heard of Ollie Ox Grill though




Doc Bec: yeah he's kinda reclusive.. I haven't even heard the whole thing yet and he released it years ago...I produced 2 beats on it though.






CRDS: cool and speaking of your beats why is your first full LP, Way Of Life 2005, so hard to track down these days?



Doc Bec: I aint press that many...

CRDS: would you ever do a re-press?

Doc Bec: no way..

CRDS: why is that please Doc?
I thought it was a dope album.

Doc Bec: I like it hard to find..that's the past you know

CRDS: I can understand that...Doc, What is your process for making beats and what equipment did you use in the past and what
do you use now?




Doc Bec: I always use the MPC since the first time Kaos and Number Nine put me on the MPC 2000.


my process is...find a good record that inspires me, then I got up with cat like "Latief" who taught me about drums and to make a beat the best way I know how...

Number Nine was one of the first dudes who hit me off with a 90 min beat tape and said any beat you want is yours...

CRDS: OK last questions...what have you got planned for the future and any shout outs please Doc?

Digging In The Tapes # 1...This That Ish Volume 1 (1995)




I got back a fat box of my old school tapes (you know those plastic things with 2 holes and reels of tape that wound around lol) and I got so many great memories from going through the first box and I decided to give away as much as I could to give my children, new homes and a new lease on life, amongst all of the tapes were some dope compilations, 2 from 1995, 1 from 1997 and 1 from 1998 (there were many others, but they didn't have track lists and I don't have a tape deck at the moment) so I decided to do the ones that had track listings and do them up and post them here, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did back in the days and today.

What we are gonna do is go back...wayback into time...back to 1988



I never thought that as a young teenager back in High School with a large rap tape and record collection, I would be here on the big bad interwebs telling you how incredible this year was and why in my honest opinion that this was the pinnacle year for Hip Hop some 20 years later.

If I may share a memory, I had a good friend from Maryland, Washington who was at my school and in my class and Kory H (what's good B?..it has been a minute huh?) and I became close friends through what else?...Hip Hop, this dude had the illest collection and I got so much music and knowledge through him...well one boring school day he told me got some new tapes and that I was going to flip over what he had...we went around and looked for a tape recorder, found one and four of us locked ourselves in the school's film room, and on that day Kory (aka Kool Korz) reached into his bag and played four albums I have never forgotten, we got to hear Follow The Leader, Straight Out The Jungle,He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper and Smoke Some Kill and I think that is why those albums are still so important to me.

I also fondly remember doing tapes for him and other classmates and bugging out at his music collection, I am hoping he reads this because I haven't seen the dude since the late 80's and I owe a lot to him...thanks for letting me share that memory.

This post is also dedicated to the MVC Posse, Mikey, Vee and Cam this is for you chaps :D

Creativity and rhymes that meant something dominated rap in 1988, you had heavy, political and conscious groups like Public Enemy, Jungle Brothers, Boogie Down Productions and then you had groups like Ultramagnetic MC's, EPMD and Eric B & Rakim that stayed true to the essence of what the art form was all about and you also had the poppy and artists that just wanted to make you move like Kid N Play, JJ Fad,Finesse and Synquis etc.

MC meant Master of Ceremonies and Mic Control in 88 and even the gangster rap artists were actually saying things in their rhymes, gold chains were rocked when you earned the right to rock them, Slick Rick rocked truck jewels and so did the God Rakim.

Beatsmiths like Marley Marl, Prince Paul,Hurby Love Bug,Bomb Squad,Phil Most Chill,Baby Bam,Kool DJ Red Alert, the late great Paul C,Ced Gee,L.G. (Lawrence Goodman),Hitman Howie Tee,Curt Cazal, DJ Doc,King of Chill, DJ Mark The 45 King and others were taking chances and developing exciting new styles and sounds and moving away from just looped up drums or drum machine beats and a basic 4 bar sample.




James Brown loops,stabs, horns and drums were in full effect of course, even getting to the point where two artists said enough!, Hellrazor's "No More James" and the Kings of Swing's "Stop Jockin James", it didn't stop other artists digging out for fresh JB material though and in 1988, classic breaks were often the choice for MC's to flow over more than programmed drum beats.

1988 was all about identity and style as well, think EPMD and you think of fisherman hats, think of Stetsasonic and you think of Troop clothing, think of Rakim and you think of Dapper Dan, think of NWA and think of La Raiders and La Kings caps and giant clocks when you think of Public Enemy.

1988 was also the year that

Yo MTV Raps first aired
NWA's-Straight Outta Compton LP goes Gold
D-Word aka Te Kupu released New Zealand's first ever rap single "Etu" with the Upper Hutt Posse
Making noise in the UK was 2 Tuff,Black Radical Mark II,D 2 The K, Demon Boyz, Einstein,Hijack, Faze One, Overlord X,Simon Harris, London Posse,Project X, Kash Da Masta, The Sindecut, Derek B, Korperayshun, MC Duke, MC Buzz B and the London Rhyme Syndicate plus more than a few others.
In Australia, Just Us from Sydney released "Combined Talent", the first Australian Hip Hop record.
The most sampled artist was James Brown
The first reggae/hip hop record known as Raggmuffin Hip Hop was recorded by Asher D & Daddy Freddy
The best ever posse rap cut "The Symphony" with Biz, Craig G, Kool G Rap and Masta Ace was recorded in 1988.
