BIG DADDY KANE - SUN 23 OCT - PRINCE BANDROOM, ST. KILDA

KING ASIATIC NOBODY'S EQUAL

The dopest rhyme spitter and ghost writer from the 'Golden Era' of Hip Hop, Big Daddy Kane is simply a living legend!

Growing up in the notorious Bed-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, Kane was educated first hand in the rapidly expanding culture of Hip Hop. He found strong influence in the lyrical proficiency of Grandmaster Caz from the Cold Crush Brothers and as a late teenager he joined a local group called the Juice Crew headed by legendary Marley Marl. During this time he was also a writer for many peers in the game, Biz Markie and Roxanne Shante who were also Juice Crew members. His first single in 1987 called ‘Raw’ was a nonstop barrage of abuse upon the mic without a pause for breath, Kane had proven he had what it took and stole centre spotlight from the Juice Crew only to pursue a solo identity. During the early 1990s, Jay-Z is known to have been Big Daddy Kane’s hype man, and Kane helped him early on in his career.

It's amazing to think that in a career spanning over 25 years Australia has never witnessed the magic of a Big Daddy Kane live show...that wait ends in October with a show promising to deliver all the classics that influenced countless MCs and defined to many a generation and lifestyle.

LONG LIVE THE KANE!

+ VERY SPECIAL GUESTS: Koolism w/ Plutonic Lab, Dialect & Despair and DJ Mike Who?

Tickets are priced at $40+b/f and now available from Obese Records

Oddisee-Rock Creek Park

One of my most admired artists for the past few years, the consistently hard working, super dope producer and MC that hails from Washington D.C.  Oddisee has just released his new instrumental album, Rock Creek Park that he recorded mostly in his new relocated home of New York.

Check the smooth and soulful first single from the album here...

The album was inspired by the place in Washington D.C. and the Black Byrd's classic track and B-Boy anthem "Rock Creek Park"

Hear and buy the album...

and stay up to date with all of Oddisee's productions, events, albums and dope photos etc here..

The Herd - Future Shade

Limited signed copies of the new album with bonus sticker on sale Fri 26th August.

It is the most complete realisation of the band’s vision, and their most carefully produced record to date. From a love of ‘90s hip hop (Red Queen Theory) to Eastern European soul (Grandma’s Song); from a Sufjan influence (My Sister’s Palace) to the incomparable (Signs of Life), Future Shade is underpinned by hip hop, but is not contained by any genre.

At their essence, The Herd have always explored the personal and the political: but the fury of a song like 77% has given way to the subtlety of a song like Shihaba, detailing a family member’s encounter with racist customs officials in Europe. The rage hasn’t dimmed though – it bubbles away, masked by melody, cheer and self-deprecating honesty. The same reason they’re loved by lawyers and labourers alike is on show here. The party band is back and sticking the knife in.

R.I.P. Case/Kase2 aka The King Of Styyyllleeeee...

Hip Hop has sadly lost another legendary graffiti writer and pioneer, the infamous Jeffrey Brown aka Case/Kase 2 lost his battle with cancer recently.

South Bronx native Kase 2 will be a name very familiar to anyone that has ever viewed the seminal and hugely infulential Hip Hop classic doco Style Wars from 1982 and will fondly remember this scene...the massively charismatic Kase 2 sketching an outline piece in his black book and telling the world he was the king of what?...the king of stttyyyllleee...and like the great Man said he could do more with one arm that most with two could ever

I am a bit late on a tribute post but better late than never...so please check these links for some of the many dope tributes and info...

R.I.P. Eugene McDaniels

The music World has suffered yet another great loss with the passing of 76 year old conscious and intelligent composer, singer and song-writer, producer and (sometime) actor Gene McDaniels who producers and Hip Hop heads will know has been sampled on some great Hip Hop records, Gene also had 40 top 40 hits including his first hits "A Hundred Pounds of Clay"  and "Tower of Strength".

and Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Makin Love" single, which he produced and also scooped up a Grammy award for it. and a BMI award after gaining over six million plays on radio.

Born Eugene Booker McDaniels in Kansas City, Missouri, USA on Feb 12th 1935, Eugene first started singing in a local Church choir in Omaha and eventually started out as a pop-soul singer in the 60s'.
His critically acclaimed 1971 album, Headless Heroes of The Apocalypse is the album that has been mined for and sampled the most, I remember back in 1990 when A Tribe Called Quest released their classic and highly influential debut album, The Paths of Rhythm...and wondered what that dope loping guitar sample and drums used as interludes on the album were and I later discovered that the samples were from "Jagger The Dagger" others that sampled from that great track were...

Non Phixion-The Full Monty (1999)

Organized Konfusion-Black Sunday (1994)

Gravediggaz-Nowhere To Run (1994)

Krispy 3-Pop Like Bubblegum (1993)

The Beatnuts-Third of The Trio (1993)

Down South-Tractors, Rakes and Hoes (1994)

Masta Ace-Jeep Ass Nigguh (1993)

De La Soul-Just Havin' A Ball (2006)

While Pete Rock's solo joint on The Mecca and The Soul Brother LP, "Soul Brother #1", The Beastie Boys-"Get It Together" and Eric B & Rakim's "Pass The Hand Grenade" lifted parts from "Headless Heroes" and Pete Rock also sampled the track "Freedom Death Dance" as did UGK for "Pocket Full of Stones" (1993)

Madlib sampled the amusing (god dam)"Supermarket Blues" for his Quasimoto alter ego on "Return of The Loop Digga" (2000)

as did People Under The Stairs for "Stay Home" (2000)

and The Jungle Brothers used it in 1993 for "I'm In Love With Indica"

DITC legend Diamond D cleverly made "clams" sound like "plans" when he sampled "Cherrystones" for the late, great Scientifik's "I Got Planz" track in 1994.

Others that sampled Eugene's music were Lifers Group, Caesar Comanche and Jamalski.
and John Legend covered his classic "Compared To What" with The Roots in 2010.

Books - new and restocks

Initially recognized for her unique graffiti and street artwork, Faith 47 is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from her own intuitive political and existential questions. Her art takes on the form of metaphor. Both abstract and definitive in meaning, plucking at our heartstrings in harmonious and sometimes dark tones as she paints.Faith's images thrive on broken-down cars and old factories, dusty side roads of lost towns and inner-city alleyways. Her deep affinity with lost spaces allows her to gracefully bring attention to the most honest and humble of environments. Her interactions resonate with our fragility and our elusive relationship with dreams, memory, human interaction and urban decay.

Europe’s most notorious train crew, Monsters Of Art, celebrates 20 years of train havoc. It is with great pleasure that we honor their anniversary with a monster edition of ON THE RUN. Join us for a rare and privileged glimpse into the unruly world of MOAS. With over 200 pages that detail MOAS’s history and unique crew concept, along with classic tales from the train yard, including great escapes, writer beef, legendary busts, extreme graffiti feats, trains, trains and more trains. This is a must-have for all diehard fans of train graffiti.

Ghost is one of the last purveyors of the New York City train writing era. He has developed his own funky letter styles that defy convention. A mad bomber at heart, he thrashes out a few hundred throw-ups without a second thought. His styles possess that same casual blast, with a combination of loose letters and psychedelic cartoons that drip off the wall with his boogaloo charm.

Sabe is a true master of styles. Adept on many levels, he is able to switch between advanced mechanical compositions, bubble styles, throw-ups, characters and photo-realism with ease. With a ‘paint now, think later’ attitude he mixes up these styles to suit the occasion, leaving a legacy of playful hybrids that sit left of mainstream.
